Brain tumor and role of ß-carotene, α- tocopherol, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase

چکیده

The erythrocyte levels of the antioxidant enzymes SOD and GPx, and serum levels of antioxidants vitamins β-carotene and β tocopherol were estimated in various types of brain tumors, and were compared with the levels in controls. Statistically significant (P<.001) diminished levels of βcarotene, β-tocopherol, SOD and GPx, were observed in all the brain tumor patients as compared to controls. Malignant tumor also showed a relative decrease in antioxidant levels as compared to benign tumors. Comparison of histopathological sections of brain tumors also suggested a inverse relationship between antioxidant level and grades of malignancy. Marked decrease in antioxidant levels may have a role in genesis of considerable oxidative stress in brain tumors. Further more, the degree of decline in antioxidant levels may indicate severity of malignancy in brain tumors.

Effect of a Diet Supplemented with α-Tocopherol and β-Carotene on ATP and Antioxidant Levels after Hepatic Ischemia-Reperfusion

Ischemia-reperfusion injury associated with liver transplantation remains a serious complication in clinical practice. In the present study the effect of intake of alpha-tocopherol or beta-carotene to limit liver injury by oxidative stress in ischemia and reperfusion was explored. Wistar rats were fed with diets enriched with alpha-tocopherol (20 mg/day) or beta-carotene (3 mg/day) for 21 days....

Antioxidant status, oxidative stress, and damage in elite trained kayakers and canoeists and sedentary controls.

Strenuous physical activity is known to generate reactive oxygen species to a point that can exceed the antioxidant defense system and lead to oxidative stress. Dietary intake of antioxidants, plasma enzymatic (superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase [Gr], and glutathione peroxidase [GPx]) activities, nonenzymatic (total antioxidant status [TAS], uric acid, alpha-tocopherol, retinol, alpha-...

Changes in Antioxidant Defense System Using Different Lipid Emulsions in Parenteral Nutrition in Children after Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

BACKGROUND Traditionally, lipids used in parenteral nutrition (PN) are based on ω-6 fatty acid-rich vegetable oils, such as soybean oil, with potential adverse effects involving oxidative stress. METHODS We evaluated the antioxidant defense system in children, after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), who were randomized to use a lipid emulsion with fish oil or soybean oil. Blood ...

S-allylcysteine inhibits circulatory lipid peroxidation and promotes antioxidants in N-nitrosodiethylamine-induced carcinogenesis.

Effects of S-allylcysteine (SAC), an organosulfur compound of garlic, on circulatory lipid peroxidation and antioxidant levels were evaluated in N-nitrosodiethylamine (NEDA)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in Wistar rats. Significantly elevated thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in the circulation of rats bearing carcinoma indicated the higher levels of lipid peroxidation which was accompanie...

Effects of Dystocia on Lipid Peroxidation and Enzymatic and Non-enzymatic Antioxidants in Crossbred Dairy Cows

The aim of the study was to evaluate oxidative stress in cows undergoing normal parturition and cows suffering from dystocia. The erythrocytic glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, plasma vitamin A and ß-carotene concentrations, and paraoxonase PON1 activity were lowered (P<0.001, P<0.01, 0.05, and 0.05, respectively) in cows with dystocia compared to normal calving cows. The erythrocytic m...
